DISKIT & HUNDUR GOMPA- LADAKH
Diskit Gompa is considered to be the most ancient and largest Buddhist monastery of the Nubra Valley. This monastery belongs to Gelugpa, the yellow hat sect of Tibetan Buddism. It was founded in the 14th century by Changzem Tserab Zangpo, a follower of Tsong Kahapa, the founder of the sect. This monastery is a sub-gompa of Thiksey gompa. Just below the main road near a bridge is Hundur Monastery. It is located in the close vicinity to the Diskit Monastery. Tourists visiting the Nubra Valley usually do not miss to take a spiritual visit to these two monasteries.
Diskit Monastery hosts a popular festival known as ‘Dosmoche’ held every year in February month, which is largely attended by the native people from all villages of Nubra valley. Outsiders cannot take part in this festival as other regions of Ladakh remain inaccessible due heavy snowfall during winter.
