PANGONG LAKE- LEH
Pangong Lake is a high altitude lake in the Himalayas situated at the altitude of about 4,350 meter (14,270 feet). Located at just 160 km northwest of Leh town, this popular blue brackish lake is 5-6 km wide and 144 km long and share international boundary with China. Almost 60% of the lake is lies in China and perhaps this is the first trans-boundary wetland in South Asia. This Lake is one of the largest and most beautiful natural brackish lakes in India and Asia as well.
On the journey towards Pangong Lake from Leh, tourist would come across the places enroute like Thiksey and Changla Pass. Thiksey is famous for having huge numbers of Buddhist monasteries. At an elevation of 17,350 feet, Changla Pass is one of the highest points in India.
Pangong Lake has several unique features, which makes it different and striking than others. The water of the lake sparkles in distinct shades of various colors like blue, green, purple and violet. Surrounded by brown mountains, layers of mud and laminated sands, this tranquil lake reflects a true picture of virgin beauty of nature. This captivating beauty of the lake makes it a paradise for photographers.
Being a saline lake, it does not support any aquatic life in its water. However, a variety of birds including migratory birds can be seen in its shore. Brahmni Ducks and Seagulls are commonly spotted bird species of the region. The best time to visit the lake is from the month of May to September. During winter months, the lake freezes completely. An inner line permit is required for tourists to visit the lake.
